Heart of Darkness: 암흑의 정체

It is all around us; it fills the universe and yet we cannot see it, touch it or even define what it is. Astronomers the world over are still trying to explain this elusive presence in the Universe a presence with nothing except its weight to prove its existence. So far all it has is a name: dark matter.

In the last 100 years, an extraordinary amount has been discovered about the universe. It wasn‘t until the 20th century that astronomers discovered that ours was not the only galaxy, but one of many. Later still we were able to use increasingly sophisticated telescopes that allowed us to see so far out into space that we can actually look back in time.

But this increased knowledge brings with it even deeper mysteries, as Professor Ostriker explains:

“Once we realized we could calculate the weights of planets and stars by measuring their gravitational pull, we started to realize that there was much more matter in the Universe than can be accounted for by the visible objects alone,” he said.

“There are elements particles of some kind perhaps that dont shine, dont react with anything and yet they exist in the Universe. It seems to be their gravity that is the glue that holds galaxies together.”

“More recently still, we have discovered strong evidence to suggest that alongside this dark matter is an even stronger component of dark energy, which dominates gravity and is causing the universe to expand at an ever accelerating rate. What this means for the future of this Universe is something we can still only guess at.”

우주공간을 가득 채우고 있으나, 우리는 그것을 볼 수도, 만질 수도, 정의할 수조차 없다. 전 세계의 천문학자들은 단지 중력에 의한 무게에 의해서만 그 존재를 보여주는 이 교묘한 실체를 밝히기 위하여 여전히 노력 중이다. 그것은 지금껏 이름을 가졌을 뿐이다: 암흑물질.

지난 100여 년간 천문학자들은 경이로울 만큼 많은 우주의 비밀을 밝혀왔다. 20세기에 들어서야 우리의 은하가 유일한 것이 아니라, 우주에 떠있는 수많은 은하 중의 하나라는 것을 알게 되었다. 그 후 고성능 망원경을 이용하여 우리는 우주의 아주 먼 곳을 볼 수 있게 되었고, 이는 시간을 거슬러가 우주의 과거의 모습을 보는 것과 마찬가지이다.

그러나 이처럼 늘어난 지식은, 오스트라이커 교수가 아래에 설명하듯이, 더 깊은 우주의 신비를 드러나게 하였다:

“만유인력에 의하여 행성과 별들의 무게를 계산할 수 있다는 사실을 깨닫게 되면, 우주에는 볼 수 있는 천체가 이루는 것보다 더 많은 양의 물질이 있음을 알 수 있게 된다.”

“우주에는 빛을 발하지 않은 물질- 아마도 어떤 종류의 입자들-이 있으며, 그것의 중력에 의하여 은하안의 별과 물질들이 묶여있다.”

“최근에는 암흑물질과 더불어 ”암흑에너지“가 있다는 것을 뒷받침하는 강력한 증거들이 발견되고 있다. 암흑에너지는 가장 큰 중력을 미치며 우주의 팽창을 가속시킨다. 이러한 사실들이 우주의 미래에 관하여 어떠한 암시를 주는 지, 우리는 단지 추측할 수 있을 뿐이다.”

역자 주: 암흑물질은 전자기파(빛)을 방출하지 않아 검출하기 어려우나, 은하의 역학적 균형으로 미루어 볼 때 우주를 채우고 있는, 중력을 미치는 물질로 추정한다. 최근 우주배경복사의 관측에 의하면 우주의 공간적 성질이 편평하며, 외부은하의 초신성 관측에 의하면 우주의 팽창속도는 가속되고 있다. 이러한 사실들을 종합해 보면, 우주는 암흑물질이 23%, 암흑에너지가 73%, 보통 물질이 4%로 이루어졌다고 추정되고 있다. 그러나 암흑물질과 암흑에너지의 “정체”는 여전히 수수께끼로 남아있다.
